The Colon Obelisk marks the start of Colon Street, the oldest street in the Philippines established in 1565 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Colon is derived from Cristobal Colon, the Spanish name of the explorer known in English as Christopher Columbus.
Colon Obelisk is a tall monument which is situated right in the middle of the street and details the historical significance of Colon. At the ends of the street, there are several markers on the lamppost which consist of information regarding the houses or the establishment which were in the area.
