The Cebu Heritage Monument is a depiction and illustration of sculptures reflecting major and symbolic events in Cebu’s history, from Rajah Humabon’s period until the recent beatification of Cebuano martyr Pedro Calungsod. Eduardo Castrillo, a local artist, created the memorial. It began construction in July 1997. The construction was supported by him and the late Senator Marcelo Fernan, as well as donations from private persons and organizations. On December 8, 2000, the project was completed and launched.
The monument depicts the conversion of Rajah Humabon and his followers to Christianity, the local revolution against Spanish rule, a Roman Catholic Mass, and the fateful battle on the island of Mactan on April 21, 1521, in which native chieftain Lapu-Lapu killed Ferdinand Magellan. The Basilica Del Sto. Nino is one of the structures carved into the monument, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, Saint John the Baptist Church, Magellan’s Cross, a Spanish Galleon, and statues of Sergio Osmena Sr. and Blessed Pedro Calungsod.
